so low that to happen while the government shutdown that isn't going to happen and donald trump surprising to many people said ok i'll give the state of the union when the government's back open but we know the tone in washington changed over the last twenty four hours there was a vote in the senate a motion put forward by the republicans to reopen the government funded border wall that field the democrats put forward a motion saying fund the government more discussions that field but more people including more democrat more people voted for the democrats motion than the republicans including a number of high profile republican senators that perhaps through donald trump a message saying you are losing the support of the big east now add to that the problems of heart with traffic control in the last few hours in the united states you can see why there was perhaps renewed enthusiasm in the oval office to try and bring these this partial shutdown to
3:33 am
a close ok allan we'll leave it there for now thank you for that let's bring in chris garcia is a political commentator and former official at the u.s. department of commerce under president trump he's joining us from washington as well so there were obviously we're still waiting to hear what president trump roster say reports that there could be an announcement of some sort of deal possibly even a three week deal to simply reopen the government was the president backed into a corner. well this is something that has become increasingly unpopular the shutdown has put pressure on both democrats and republicans in congress as well as the white house as they seek funding for this border wall the continuing resolution as it's called this three three week stopgap funding measure is very unpopular as a solution for both members of congress as well as federal agencies and that's because this continuing resolution is seen really as a kicking down kicking the can down the road type of solution where really a final deal is not being made again the three we continue resolution can be
3:34 am
extended there could be another continuing resolution that's done as is often the case when it comes to spending bills from congress so the president is very much in control is what i believe he will announce today i think that what is reported what was just mentioned a moment ago by your other guest is that the state of the union address again was expected to happen next week nancy pelosi speaker pelosi withdrew that invitation and indicated that it would not take place until after the shutdown now many individuals are saying that this is a sign that president trumpets caved but remember that the state of the union address is a prime time address that the president of the united states makes to not just congress but also to the american people and so the psychology behind this some insiders are saying is that the president will now have an opportunity to address the american people directly and make his case for the border wall and other funding at the at the border at the southern border yeah we'll have to wait and see what he says in a few moments time chris garcia we appreciate you sticking around for the time
3:35 am
being thank you all right so that is the life fix your coming to us from the rose garden at the white house where president trump is expected any moment to be coming out and making some sort of statement on the partial government shutdown now in its thirty fifth day. for now it's time for the sports news with peter all right thank you during australia's defense of the asian cup title has been ended by hosts the united arab emirates was a tight quarter final match in a lane but the emirates scored a lucky break in the second half. a terrible back pass for a little lost taken there was picked up by alley put at the edge of the box easily went around keeper matthew ryan the goal was the only one of the game and put the u.a.e. into the seventy five. so they are now playing for a place in the final the next world cup hosts were up against asian powerhouse
3:36 am
south korea who have won the tournament twice before but later in the second half carter's abdulaziz hatem got the breakthrough curling in a low strike almost immediately south korea hit back but they go with roof side even after the winter v a r one will result in abu dhabi was enough to put carter into their first asian cup semifinal no qatari fans were able to attend the game because of the ongoing diplomatic blockade of the country by hosts the united arab emirates and saudi arabia but a handful of omani fans were there to celebrate with the qatar eating. so is cut a march on in the asian cup preparations for the a world cup also continue despite the blockade speaking at the world economic forum in davos the head of the twenty twenty two world cup organizing committee house and after a while he told all the syria that football showpiece is bringing change to the country and the national team. the transformative power of hosting
3:37 am
a tournament at the world cup is not just limited to the national team but no doubt the national team and we have a fantastic example in east asia japan south korea when they host a tournament you can see where their teams are today you can see where their leagues are today there is no dust they will have that knock on effect what i'd like to also emphasize is these tournaments have a knock on effect in terms of social events and economic events as well and we are working very hard to capture as much as possible these benefits and so that these benefits remain beyond twenty twenty two and these benefits are felt beyond the state of the middle east and the arab world. is not going to help. the block. around that's. the block. action taken by the blockading nations against qatar. you know for us we've always said that this world cup is a regional tournament it is a tournament for the people of the region it is a tournament that we that we work very hard and we're working very hard to ensure that the people of the region benefit from it i think it's
3:38 am
a testimony to the resilience of the state of the people of being able to overcome such an obstacle and now honestly we're focusing on delivery deliveries coming along very very well as i said projects are coming along the pipeline according to schedule and we're ready to deliver and host the world in twenty twenty. human rights watch report twenty one things that i still need to be somewhere in terms of workers rights and that's something we've always agreed to i mean i've never personally i've never said that the work is done on the back every time we've spoken to international organizations every time we have discussed the progress and the significant progress of the state of qatar has made it work we have always said that more work needs to be done i don't believe any nation can rest on its laurels and say that everything has been done in relation to labor reforms to work welfare reforms and there is no different however what is very positive is the fact that there's a recognition of significant progress being made good work being done on the ground and being done in
3:39 am
a way where it's sustainable for the long term not short term solutions or band-aid solutions and that is exactly what we're looking for we're looking for long term solutions in terms of labor reforms and we're very proud of it but again there's a lot more work to be done. a match all tennis fans have been waiting for will double another joke of each has set up a final with these old rival rafael nadal cruised through the semifinal against luke up beating the frenchman in straight sets six hundred six two and six two djokovic she is aiming for his seventh title in melbourne and a reunion with the girl of suit. italian dominic paris is a man who enjoys the harlem cum cool scene. in austria and proved why yet again on friday paris won the world cup downhill victories in twenty thirteen twenty seventeen and again on this occasion italian was the only man to dip under the one minute fifty seven second mark but the event was overshadowed by a horrific crash this is sweden's alexander cole to use down to the tenth and as
3:40 am
you can see it did not in the way he had planned yet to be airlifted by helicopter to hospital of the receiving lengthy medical treatment. and that's all the sport more again later during ok peter thank you for that update we'll just show you the live pictures from the white house where a donald trump is expected to come out any moment now and to make a speech on the partial government shutdown now in its thirty fifth they will bring you that live as and when it happens and we will pass the want to our team from london who has more news coming up in a moment thanks for watching the news hour but by.
3:41 am
sat here has never been a real easy sell for investment are the reserved drop rule are they understated or overstated they own those shares your company for the people bought. in the next episode of techno the team travels to the heart of the amazon. where we are now should be grateful to investigate illegal gold mining mercury has a very unique characteristic of finding the goal for a minor it's almost like magic and the technology being used to expose its devastating impact and so what we end up doing is imaging a forest in very high fidelity street techno on all just zero. we understand the differences. and the similarities of cultures across the world
3:42 am
so no matter how you take it al-jazeera will bring in the news and current affairs that matter to you al-jazeera. russian filmmaker andrina christoph explores how putin's russia impacts the very values of the nation the russians are famous for their cultural legacy but can traditional and conservative be the source of stagnation and authoritarian rule why wasn't the assume raided by the police to seize ukraine six homosexuality the significance of it put into the russian elite is that he's like a fake you who controls the cobra in such a putin's russia on al-jazeera. president trump expected to announce a tentative deal with congressional leaders to reopen the government for three weeks. this off to stop shortages ground and delay hundreds of flights at three
3:43 am
major airports. in london you know with al jazeera also coming up on the program. for the poor to. be. longtime trump ally roger stone appears in court facing seven charges stemming from robert miller's investigation also. venezuela's self declared interim president calls for mass demonstrations and rejects nicolas maduro offer of talks. stay thirty five of the government shut down and the u.s. media reporting that a deal has been reached to reopen federal services on
3:44 am
a temporary basis and now president is expected to speak very imminently we think that he will announce an agreement with the opposition democrats that will fund services for three weeks that is still no longer term solution to trump's demand for five point seven billion dollars for a border war with mexico this is the issue at the heart of the deadlock in washington right now while the potential agreement comes after several major airports in the united states were hit by major delays as a direct result of the shutdown the federal aviation administration says departures from new york la guardia philadelphia newark were all delayed many airport workers who've have gone two months now without pay and they've reportedly started calling in sick. so in a moment we'll be speaking to heidi jo castro ronald reagan airport in arlington virginia first more on the shutdown deal possible deal we're hearing from alan fischer in washington and i suppose allan we're waiting to hear if the delays and
3:45 am
disruption we've been speaking about over the past few hours has translated into some sort of temporary agreement for the time being. well i suspect the pressure really started to build on thursday on the senate floor when you remember there were competing bills the republicans wanted to pass a bill which would reopen the government and give donald trump five point seven billion dollars for his border wall the democrats decided that they would put forward their own motion to reopen the government with new money for the border wall both motions were defeated they didn't get to sixty votes as you need in the senate but a number of important significant republicans voted for the democrat move in that signaled to the white house to the republican leadership you are losing the base of support here no what we are told is that there will be a continuing resolution that's a short term funding measure for the u.s. government it will lower all those that have been partially closed to reopen and that will continue until february the fifteenth of course the problem we have then
3:46 am
is that none of the major issues here are being resolved that the main one being donald trump wants money for his war and the democrats don't want to give them any the democrats are talking about spending roughly five point seven billion dollars on improved border security they're talking about more guards they're talking about more immigration judges they're talking about more high tech measures on the border but they do not want a wall or a barrier or anything like that meanwhile donald trump is very keen that that happens you remember forty hours ago now. everything kind of seems to match up but about forty hours ago he tweeted out that build the wall make rainfall that's the new slogan so he's determined to push this through so the fundamental issues aren't being addressed the idea that congress will somehow get together in a three week window and put everything together at this point looking forward seems
3:47 am
a bit far fetched but stranger things have happened in washington the thing is no one is ready to sign off and saying this is what's going to happen until. well the president says it normally you would think that that's a spec for the office in this occasion it's not that's because donald trump has in the past spoken to senate republicans there was something that passed through the senate just before christmas looked as if the government was going to get funded everything was fine and then donald trump when he read some of the criticism of right wing commentators decided that he wasn't going to support that at all and pulled the plug on that there are some right wing commentators among those who criticize donald trump at that point who are saying look if you don't get a wall in this what is the point and donald trump will be acutely aware of that but you must also be aware that this is a very unpopular shutdown his personal support is plummeting it is hurting the economy which is the one thing that he really wanted to campaign on come twenty
3:48 am
twenty and he's also losing support among republicans in the house and the senate that is perhaps why he has decided at this point it would be a good idea to at least reopen the government give federal workers their checks because today they missed their second check here in the united states you tend to get paid twice a month they missed their second check it is causing a great deal of hardship and you have got senior members of the trump administration going on t.v. and seeing as was described to me stupid things about the shutdown saying why don't workers go and get short term loans which just make them look completely detached from the order and working people of the united states and so with all of that that is perhaps why donald trump thinks your let's get something done let's get something on paper and let's perhaps get the government reopened and at least get people around the table to talk again precisely what we're waiting to hear if that
3:49 am
deal has been reached but there has been a delay hasn't there in making that announcement because we're expecting that a little while ago allan will. a bit late heidi joe castro is now ronald reagan washington national airport just outside the u.s. capitol. heidi is allan was explaining the traffic control is been working for weeks now without pay this is affecting travel potentially pushing people safety at risk how serious a situation are we seeing unfold there. you should not be deceived but exactly how normal it looks at the moment here ronald reagan airport just south of washington d.c. because it was the pressure that was ratcheting up here and in airports across the country and namely in new york's la guardia airport this morning that reportedly really had a significant impact on the president's decision to come out and address the nation
3:50 am
shortly on this suppose it lands at least for now reopen the government this morning new york's la guardia airport was under us ground stop by the f.a.a. that basically meant that planes were not allowed to depart and land in that airport because of a staffing shortage of air control officers and these are the people that monitor incoming air traffic at departures to make sure that that airplanes do not collide in mid air so it is sensual work that these workers have been doing for now five weeks without pay. and a statement said that there were essentially too many of these workers nearly word you know who had called in sick rather than come in and continue to pick at work without pay and that led to that safety concern so they put they called in that ground stop which was lifted very shortly however they only made that possible by
3:51 am
diverting flights or delaying others and that only expanded the impact to nearby airports across the region like in new jersey and like. here in d.c. so really what's happening now is a hercules an effort by airlines and by administration officials with the transportation administration to ease the pain and the discomfort that the traveling public are feeling in the united states there was just a poll out a few minutes ago washington post a.b.c. poll that shows one in five americans report having suffered consequences of this partial government shutdown which is now the longest in u.s. history so despite these efforts to minimize that impact it is still being felt and at least in these airports it's interesting that's like the shutdown is a storm in a sense when you look at the weather radars all clear across the country however because it is impacting the staffing in those he hugs that impact is only spreading
3:52 am
and what normalcy we see now can only be sustained for whatever time these workers may continue suffering through this forced work without pay or being sent home on a temporary laid off in either case unable to pay their bills unable to sustain their families until some sort of solution is reached marion thanks very much for now heidi joe castro. and all the developments out of washington donald trump's close ally role just own as appeared in court after being arrested as possible as investigation into possible russian collusion in the two thousand and sixteen election stone was taken into custody in florida off to a grand jury indictment he's facing seven charges including obstructing official proceedings making false statements and witness tampering stone says he will fight the charges. i will probably not guilty to these charges i will defeat
3:53 am
them in court i believe this is a politically motivated investigation i have troubled by the political motivations of the prosecutor. and as i have said previously there is no circumstances whatsoever under which i will bear witness against the president nor will i make up lies to ease the pressure on myself a party calling is following the story for us from washington and joins us now tell us more about the descriptions contained within this indictment and why it could possibly be putting much more pressure now on president trump. well it matters because stone roger stone is the closest confidant to president trump that is yet to be indicted he has known him for decades and this is also the closest that the molar team has gotten to basically laying out what could be seen as conspiracy
3:54 am
although stone is not yet charged with conspiracy and currently charged with conspiracy i think before i get into that i want to point out he likes to call it a political motivated witch hunt robert muller is a lifelong republican and many members of his team are in fact republicans that said here's what the indictment says it says basically roger stone was the interim midhir interior mirror that's hard to say than you might think at least today between wiki leaks and the charm campaign and this is one nugget that i think we really need to talk about it says in the indictment that a senior level member of the charm campaign was directed to contact roger stone to get him to contact wiki leaks so that leaves the question are they talking about president trump because who else could direct a senior member of the campaign so the allegation is he was being a conduit between wiki leaks and the charm campaign and that when he was called before the house intelligence committee on this put under oath he was asked flat out were you have communicated he said no no communications no text messages and
3:55 am
the problem for stone was before this he would come out and say hey wiki leaks has got this these d.n.c. e-mails or they're going to take a look at the.
